We operate currently 420 diverse, peer-reviewed, open-access journals supported by over 35,500 academic editors. We serve scholars from around the world to ensure the latest research is openly and broadly available. Besides our main publishing business, we develop and maintain digital platforms and software ranging from scientific exchange platforms to article databases and search engines, all focused on empowering scholars and giving them the best possible product and service. As of the end of 2022, we count more than 6700 colleagues in 17 offices across 11 countries.

To strengthen our IT team, we are looking for an experienced Software Solution Architect who will be responsible for designing, architecting and developing information and software systems for our organization. This role requires a combination of software architecture and engineering expertise and a good business acumen. There is also the opportunity for future team management to share skills in knowledge with a group in internal architects. You are a strong communicator that understands stakeholder needs and effectively and efficiently translates them into a high-level system architecture and specific software requirements. The role is a full-time and permanent position based in our city center office in Basel, Switzerland.

Tasks & Responsibilities

• Responsible for the technical solution design for several existing platforms
• Responsible for the technology stack and framework selection
• Lead the solution design for a new generation of online publishing tools
• Develop high-level design and architecture for software solutions
• Define technical requirements and specifications for software development teams
• Audit existing and ongoing architecture design and review projects
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements
• Optimize design and development processes between different teams and projects
• Ensure that software solutions are scalable, available, maintainable, and secure
• Mentor and provide guidance to software development teams.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in computer science or information systems
• 5+ years experience in software architecture, software design and delivery of software solutions
• Extensive experience in one or more of the following technologies: Python, PHP, Node.js, TypeScript, Docker
• Technical expertise in software design patterns and software architecture
• Experienced in micro-services architecture
• Experienced in high concurrency system design
• Familiar with agile software development methodologies (Scrum)
• Good communication and collaboration skills 
• Good at technical documentation and communication of artifacts and technical concepts
• Proficiency in written and spoken English is a must
• Applicants must be eligible to work in Switzerland (CH or EU citizenship).
